Dari Abu Abdurrahman, Abdullah bin Umar bin Khaththab Rodhiallahu ‘anhu berkata, “saya mendengar rasulullah Shalallahu ‘alaihi wasallam bersabda,” Dulu sebelum kamu, ada tiga orang berjalan-jalan kemudian mereka mendapatkan sebuah gua yang dapat dimanfaatkan untuk berteduh, maka merekapun masuk kedalamnya. Kemudian tiba-tiba ada batu dari atas bukit yang menggelinding dan menutupi pintu gua itu sehingga mereka tidak dapat keluar.
Salah seorang diantara mereka berkata, “Sesungguhnya tidak ada yang dapat menyelamatkan kamu sekalian dari bencana ini kecuali bila kamu sekalian berdo’a kepada Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala dengan menyebutkan amal-amal shalih yang pernah kalian perbuat.”
Salah seorang di antara mereka menimpali, “Wahai Allah saya mempunyai ayah ibu yang sudah tua renta, saya biasa mendahulukan memberi susu kepada keduanya sebelum saya memberikannya kepada keluarga dan budak saya. Pada suatu hari saya terlambat pulang dari mencari kayu dan saya menemui keduanya sudah tidur, saya terus memerah susu untuk persediaan minum keduanya. Karena saya mendapati mereka berdua telah tidur maka saya pun enggan untuk membangunkan mereka. Kemudian saya berjanji tidak akan memberi minum susu itu baik kepada keluarga maupun kepada budak sebelum saya memberi minum kepada ayah bunda.
Saya menunggu ayah bunda, hingga terbit fajar barulah keduanya bangun sementara anak-anakku menangis, mereka mengelilingi kakiku. Setelah mereka bangun, kuberikan minuman susu kepada keduanya. Wahai Allah jika saya berbuat seperti itu karena mengharapkan wajahMu maka geserkanlah batu yang menutupi gua ini.” Maka bergeserlah sedikit batu itu tetapi mereka belum bisa keluar dari gua tersebut.
Yang lain berkata, ”Wahai Allah, sesungguhnya saya mempunyai saudara sepupu yang sangat saya cintai.” Pada riwayat yang lain dikatakan, “Saya sangat mencintainya sebagaimana lazimnya orang laki-laki mencintai seorang perempuan, kemudian saya ingin berbuat zina dengannya tetapi ia selalu menolaknya. Selang beberapa tahun ia tertimpa kesulitan kemudian datang kepada saya dan saya berikan kepadanya 120 dinar, dengan syarat ia harus mau bersebadan denganku, dan ia pun setuju.
Ketika saya menguasainya, pada riwayat lain dikatakan, kemudian ketika saya berada di antara kedua kakinya dia berkata, “Takutlah kamu kepada Allah dan jangan kau robekkan selaput daraku kecuali dengan cara yang benar.” Kemudian saya meninggalkannya, padahal dia adalah seseorang yang sangat saya cintai dan saya telah merelakan emas (dinar) yang saya berikan kepadanya. Wahai Allah, jika saya berbuat seperti itu karena mengharapkan ridhaMu, geserkanlah batu yang menutup gua ini.” Maka bergeserlah batu itu tetapi mereka belum bisa keluar dari gua itu.
Orang yang ketiga berkata, “Wahai Allah, saya mempekerjakan beberapa karyawan dan semuanya saya gaji dengan sempurna kecuali ada seorang yang pergi, meninggalkan saya dan tidak mau mengambil gajinya terlebih dahulu. Kemudian gaji itu saya kembangkan sehingga menjadi banyak.
Selang beberapa lama dia datang kepada saya dan berkata, “Wahai hamba Allah, berikanlah gaji saya yang dulu itu.” Saya berkata, “Semua yang kamu lihat itu baik onta, sapi, kambing maupun budak yang menggembalakannya adalah gajimu.” Ia berkata, “Wahai hamba Allah, janganlah engkau mempermainkan saya.” Saya menjawab, “Saya tidak mempermainkan kamu.” Kemudian diapun mengambil semuanya dengan tidak meninggalkan sisa sedikitpun. Wahai Allah jika saya berbuat itu karena mengharap ridhaMu, maka geserkanlah batu itu.” Lalu batu itupun bergeser dan mereka bisa keluar dari dalam gua.”
